Course Development with GenAI - A new Imperative for Integrity and Quality?

Date: June 5, 2024 1:50 - 2:30 PM MT
Speakers: Wade Weichel, Sr. Dir. Product Management and Strategy, Anthology Frederick Wehrle, Assistant Dean for Academic Innovation and Learning at UCLA Extension, UCLA Extension

Faculty and instructional designers use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools to create courses—including syllabi, texts, slides, scripts, assignments, and exams—often without disclosure to the institution or students. This situation undermines institutional integrity and creates significant reputational and legal risks. In this session, we’ll look at how present policy frameworks allowed controlled use of GenAI within a Learning Management System, giving insights into adoption and acceptance rates during course development.

We’ll then look at lessons learned from early experiments with a new approach to course development in which the entirety of a course is first created by instructional designers using GenAI, then reviewed and enhanced by faculty. This approach aims at providing the institution with sufficient control over the content generated by GenAI to allow for transparent disclosure of the use of GenAI to students. In addition, it aims at increasing the time faculty can spend on developing their pedagogy and enriching the course with their personal expertise and experience, hence improving the learning experience.

Through an interactive presentation, we will engage the audience in a discussion on the future of course development, the function of Learning Management Systems, the needs for policy, and the roles of faculty and instructional designers, with the perspective of creating more access to higher quality education.
